Air pressure causes a piston to oscillate back and forth inside a fully enclosed cylinder. A self-generated air cushion prevents the piston from impacting the end of the cylinder and increases the force of the vibrations. Because there is no impact the noise level is extremely low.
An internal spring ensures immediate starting and the vibrations cease almost immediately the air is turned off.

The bodies are aluminium or steel depending upon model.
